Shel Silverstein Hop

Today is Shel Silverstein's birthday, and it's time for a hop, so be sure and click the graphic towards the bottom of the page to go on to Bento, Monsters next. This author is one of the first, last, and 'onlys' for me. He is a master of literary arts, as well as actual art. There is not a thing from him I haven't enjoyed, both as a child and as an adult. I have every one of his books (so far as I know) and share them frequently with the kiddo. Her favorite is Don't Bump the Glump. And, while she wanted me to make any number of creatures from her favorite poems, she finally setting on the title and a character of my choice. Whew! Can you imagine what the Glump would look like in a lunchbox? Not so appetizing, I'd think. Text, it is!

For this occasion, the hubby had to get one too. While, he doesn't necessarily share my childhood obsession, he does like Silverstein. I mean, who doesn't? Anyways, I used to make him read Runny Babbit to me, so that was the lunch he got!
shel silverstein bento
Lentil salad, grapes, strawberries, sesame tofu, fattoush salad, and provolone cheese.

And snack for the kiddo.. a mini blueberry muffin, half a banana (and a few raw pecans I threw in later)

Playing Hooky

We're going on a little road trip today. It really wasn't planned hooky from school, but when your options are limited, you have to do what you can. It so happens that I have to be down in Ann Arbor today in the middle of the day, and with no real alternative, the kiddo is joining me on my little adventure. It would be a lie, though, if I said I was disappointed. We'll make a day of it and hit our favorite toy store, as well as Whole Foods and Trader Joe's! So, rather than Kindergarten lunch #15, a road trip snacker it was instead. And, we're off!

road trip bento
Trader Joe's mini 12 grain crackers, yellow bell pepper, raspberries, leftover baked chicken, and frozen yogurt cars.
frozen yogurt shapes
I still swear by these silicone ice trays for making frozen yogurt shapes. The kiddo loves them and there is always a bag full of random shapes in the freezer. Greek yogurt works the best, and I only use Chobani or Brown Cow, so I can't say how other brands will hold up, but I imagine any would be fine. You can do this with applesauce too!

Swim Little Fishy

When I hear the word school, my Biology major kicks in and I immediately think fish. Course, now I think Kindergarten, but fish still comes in a close second. So, I sent my little fishy to school with her own fishy lunch. And, in case you're wondering.. because I know you are.. what comes in third for me is that blasted song from a Baby Einstein back in the day.. "Say hey, little fishy... do you wanna take a swim with me..swim around the reef all day, obeying all the rules cuz even though we're having fun, you know we're still in school..." Yup. That one.
Kindergarten bento
Turkey pastrami and Swiss sandwich, cucumber, grapes, yogurt raisins, and Goldfish crackers.
Kindergarten bento
I seriously love this little box. It's not the easiest for little hands because you have to get the lid seated on the base just right for it to clip and seal all the way around, but come on now, how cute is that fish swimming just above the waves?

Kindergarten snack box
PM Snack - Special K Pastry Crisp and (like it says) a banana.
I think this trick for writing on bananas has been around since I was a kid, at least. It's an oldie, but a goodie! If you don't know about it, just use a toothpick (or a fork tine since I'm too lazy resourceful to get out a toothpick when I have a perfectly good fork sitting right next to me) to score your design on the skin of the banana. Be sure not to pierce through. Within minutes, your message appears. Genius!

Just 'Lion' Around

I was at a loss for what to pack for lunch today, so scraps from other lunches and some odds and ends I want to use up are what got thrown into this one. I thought to myself that this was a lunch with foods just lying around... and then I saw some lion picks. Eureka! 'Lion' around lunch it was!

Kindergarten bento lunch
Trader Joe's 12 grain mini crackers, cheddar cheese, smoked ham, Kalamata olives, frozen Chobani banana Greek yogurt, cucumber, mini snickers square, yogurt raisins, and pecans.

For snack, I tried to keep a patriotic color theme. It is Constitution Day, after all!
Kindergarten snack box
Boo Berry cereal (sorry, but no way was I paying $3.99 for a tiny container of blueberries), cherry tomatoes, and Babybel cheese.
